First National AI Workshop in Teaching and Learning

Introduction
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and in collaboration with Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) and Wesley College of Education with key educational stakeholders, CENDLOS successfully organized Ghana’s First National AI Workshop in Teaching and Learning. This pivotal event aimed to introduce and integrate artificial intelligence into the country’s educational framework at the College of Education, ensuring our teaching and learning practices are future-ready.

Objectives

  1. To train educators in using AI-driven tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Canva to create Open Educational Resources (OERs)
  2. To discuss their applications in transforming teaching and learning experiences.
  3. To explore the ethical considerations of AI use in education.

Key Highlights

  • ChatGPT: Training on how to use this tool for generating lesson plans, quizzes, and personalized content for students.
  • Gemini: Introduction to its capabilities in developing tailored educational resources.
  • Canva: Practical sessions on creating engaging and visually appealing teaching materials.

Impact

  • Enhanced teacher proficiency in utilizing AI-driven tools.
  • Improved collaboration between educators and technologists in designing effective learning strategies.
  • Increased awareness of ethical and societal implications of AI in education.

Challenges

  • Limited access to reliable internet connectivity in rural schools.
  • The need for extended hands-on training sessions to ensure teacher confidence.

Conclusion and Way Forward
This workshop is a significant leap toward redefining education in Ghana. Moving forward, CENDLOS will continue to engage stakeholders, offer advanced training programs, and implement strategies to ensure equitable AI adoption in education nationwide.
